Each year the National Archives of Australia releases Cabinet documents that become publicly available on 1 January. To help journalists write stories for publication in the New Year, we host an embargoed media briefing a month earlier. As part of the briefing and to provide context, we invite a historian to write an essay on issues that occupied the Cabinet and made the news that year.
In 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 we released Cabinet documents from the Whitlam governments of 30 years previously. We are now pleased to consolidate and share with you essays written by historians Ian Hancock and Kellie Abbott for the exclusive, embargoed media briefings at that time.
